Day 25-29 07/06/2010
Didn't get to do much during those days really. Kinda hard to when you're expected to spend some time with relatives. I did manage one short session to lay out the gray scale version of Transformation. I just need to go in and add some more detail and the color. Work needs to be done on the Spell painting as well. I've decided that I'm going to scan the canvas works so that I can print them out with the rest. The teacher will get printed copies of each to keep/look over. #EDITED AT 9:23# Sat down at the dinner table and have not moved since 3:15, working the entire time on this one. I had my brother pose for yet another picture, just so I could get the lighting right. I added an overlay layer and played with the colors, keeping to an orange and blue color scheme. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the refraction of light from the mirror and sword. Of course, it didn't feel right without it either. On to spend some time on the Spell painting. This morning was dedicated to working on the Spell cover. I will admit that I wasn't happy with it at first, but it has grown on me. I went back and adjusted the position of the claws and added in the main character's legs. It really seems to help with showing where everything is. The afternoon was given to coloring the Halo WIP. I created an overlay layer and applied the color. I also saw that the horde in the back wasn't casting any shadow and fixed it. It's not quite done yet. Should be by the time I'm back home. There won't be any updates till at least Monday. I won't have any access to the net. Day 22/23 06/29/2010
Didn't get a chance to work on anything yesterday. I did more than enough on Sunday anyway. Today, I did begin the underpainting for the Spell Cover. At this moment, I'm not quite happy with the angle at which the claw is at, but I'll go and do some more digital mock-ups and change the angle later. I just want to get it started enough since I won't be taking it with me to my Grandmother's. As for the exicution of this piece, I'm going for an expressionistic approach; having the colors play a big role. Day 21 cont... 06/28/2010
I found the time last night to do even more work on the Halo: Flood cover. After viewing some inspirational art by Janashi on DA and concept art, I've decided to forgo any lines in this one. I'm more comfortable with lines in my art, but this feel right. Yet more detail on MC. On to the flood. Day 20/21 06/27/2010
Yesterday was too busy for me to do anything really, so I'll call it my day off. This morning, I continued detailing the Halo WIP. I pulled some more reference of the flood and the Library off the Internet, along with my trusty Halo art book. I pushed the group of flood behind the chief farther into the back. I'll add some detail into the mass towards the end. For the floor, I found a picture of the floor from the same level and copied it and dropped it in on an overlay layer, erasing the bits that cover the characters. The next step should be adding color. I don't expect to finish this one in the next few days. I'm saving it because the digital covers are easier to work on than the traditional. I need to start on the Spell cover tomorrow. Day 18/19 06/25/2010
My meeting yesterday went well. He liked the Gryphon print out. After seeing it on paper, I can see some parts that I still need to clean out. I also brought the painting as promised. He recommended I scan or photograph it and switch it to greyscale to see which parts pop and which need more contrast. The last work I brought in was a WIP of the Halo cover. I continued to work on it today. It might look like nothing has really been changed, but there is a differnece. Believe me. I'm such a big Halo nerd that I have to make sure the armor is correct. My brother was also kind enough to pose for some reference pictures for the Spell cover. He did a few different poses that I can play with. Day 17 06/23/2010
I worked on the Halo cover this morning, leaving the Dreaming Void till after the professor looks at it. I started laying in the detail of the armor and getting the tones correct. The rest of the work will be done in greyscale with an overlay layer. This and the Gryphon will be printed out so that the teacher can see them on paper. I'll bring along the painting too. As for the rest, I'm going to take the reference picture of my brother for the Cameleon cover tomorrow. I'll be unable to do any painting traditionaly over the 4th, so I need to get it done ASAP. The other covers can be done whenever, whereever. Day 16 06/22/2010
I cheated a bit. I actually did more work yesterday, but didn't post it. It was more of an experiment than anything else, since I painted over it completely today. It involved the usage of my airbrush and the attempt to create stars. I found a FAQ that mentioned pinching the tube and tilting the airbrush so that it would splatter. Worked, kinda.... But I wasn't really happy with it. Felt too fake. So, I spent this morning looking for good examples of space art done traditionaly. Not that many to find, at all. Then I remembered one of my favorite illustrators, John Harris. He has amazing space paintings, done in oil and acrylic. (Not on the same canvas of course.) Using some of his pieces for inspiration, I repainted the entire canvas, going for a more expressionistic technique. And yet again, I find myself creating each star by hand, but it wasn't as bad as last time. Overall, I went for a very dark color scheme. I'll apologize now. I suck at taking pictures of my traditional stuff. It looks much better in person. I don't know if I'm done with it yet. I'll be speaking with the professor on thursday and I'll bring it in so he can see it. Day 14/15 06/21/2010
With yesterday being Father's Day, nothing really got done. Right before bed, I did, however, get the base drawing down for The Dreaming Void, as well as a layer of black. This morning, I went about adding blues and browns to the black so that it didn't look flat. The area of the nebula on each side of the darkness also got a initial splash of color. There is still a lot of work to be done on this one. Each layer is going to go on with the translucency of water colors. This will allow me to get the effect I want. It's still too opaque at this point. Sorry for the bad photographs. Day 12 06/18/2010
More work was done on the Gryphon cover this morning. More defining of the edges and details added to the face. I increased the area of the wings, removing the odd double feathers. I had used them because they were present on some reference pictures, but they don't feel right on this. I've hidden the black feathers at the bottom because I'm not sure if they are needed. It feels a bit unbalanced with them. I won't be posting anything else today until I call my professor and we talk about the blog and what I've been posting. I might start on the Dark Void under-drawings after that, since it will be done in acrylic. | ArchivesCategoriesAll |
